Retail Therapy, Man-Style

Looking back on it, yesterday was pretty hard for me… from a keeping sober perspective, anyway.

Winter is on the decline and the sun was out, ushering in spring time… I was off work around noon and had all kinds of me time. I was euphoric and excited and stress-free, it was great! I wanted a drink though as this would have been a common way for me to celebrate a Friday afternoon of awesome freedom. And, ironically, this desire for a drink… be it a beer or a whiskey… was causing me stress on an otherwise stress-free day.

Eventually, I’d get home and was kind of down in the dumps. For the past week and a bit, I have been supercharged for planning home renovations and organizing and cleaning up. Yesterday into the evening, I couldn’t put two and two together on anything like that. The kids were out for the evening and the wife was at work until the wee hours so it was all me at that point with my own thoughts.

I was in Hell, gentlemen… let me assure you.

I had almost given myself permission to go out for a drink at a nearby bar/pub and the time was coming up on 8:00 pm. I was conflicted about the thoughts and decided that sitting around thinking about it was not the way to go. I got my clothes on, jumped in my Jeep and drove my ass down to Cabela’s.

I have been gearing up for doing more family camping and to also start doing some backpacking trips this summer. I know that I need a few more specialized items for backpacking rather than just camping; one of those things being a tent of more appropriate size. The one I bought at the start of this whole gearing up process was done in a hurry and from an uneducated headspace.

Also, I started playing Airsoft with my 14 year old son last year. After getting a gift card at Cabela’s for Christmas, I went out and bought my own gun to play with. However, to be able to play with the piece I bought, I’m going to need a second clip for ammunition since reloading a clip during a match is a good way to get yourself shot.

Finally, I have been trying to find ways to save money and trim up our finances at home. We have grown accustomed to a lifestyle of excess and waste… I am guilty as well. I decided to stop buying Starbucks coffee every morning and start making my own at home. However, I don’t have a reliable vessel to transport my morning wake-up juice in so I was on the market for an insulated Thermos.

So I bought these three items while at Cabela’s. The tent was showing as discontinued in their system and the only one left in the store was the floor model… so I bought the floor model with a $20 discount off list price.

After I left the store, my focus was on getting into nature and doing positive things rather than on drinking. As I drove out of the parking lot, I passed a liquor store… and just kept on driving, with a smile on my face I might add.

The Written Word

I haven’t written anything since the 20th, Day 43. Between this place and my handwritten journal, I haven’t connected with myself in over 3 days. I actually had to write it out to figure out what Day it is.

Skullmuggery

Hey, I am still working on getting through my first cup of coffee so fuck off. LOL

Anyway, I’ve been dealing with the effects of a flu for the past few days which has not made me overly introspective. At the same time, I started physiotherapy for my shoulder and the exercises are pretty tough; my shoulder and my entire back are a complete mess after doing them. Add the muscle pain and joint ache associated with the flu and… well… I’ve been in a particular little slice of Hell for the past few days.

Well, it’s Christmas-fucking-Eve. December 24th. Despite the fact that I haven’t spent a penny on alcohol, my bank account is still running on empty.

I’ve funnelled all of my limited resources into this friggin’ holiday… and so soon after returning to work. My last paycheck was about ¾ of what it normally would have been since I was on short-term disability leave but with all of the same expenses. I had to get another damn payday loan to buy gifts after all that.

I hate payday loans.

Having spent what I have, I have nothing left until New Years Eve. There isn’t a lot of food in the house and I’m all out of painkillers for my shoulder. But at least I’m almost out of the woods with this flu.

All of this sounds a bit “bah humbug” doesn’t it? Really, I’m not that cranky. I’ll make it through. It’s Christmas time and I’m relaxing right now. I don’t really have anywhere I need to be and having nothing that I really need to do right now. I have as much wrapping done as I can do right now and I have a bowl of Mac N’ Cheese in me guttyworks. It could always be worse.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

My Coffee Is Sacred

So, we have the carafe style coffee makers now. No more of this individualization of your coffee experience… unless you like using those syrups, then all the power to ya.

But everyone feels like they gotta get all creative with the coffee making. The one chick in this area who drinks decaf makes a 1.5 package pot of decaf. Whatever, it’s fucking decaf… you’re already laying with Satan for that.

But this older lady in the office, who I’m pretty sure she is a pack a day smoker, has been beating me into the office and taken over the whole coffee making thing. (I’ve been consistently making the coffee since switching over and she’s been at the other office until last week.)

She has got the philosophy of only making a half pot since “it’s more flavorful” this way. I don’t know what the fuck she is doing but yesterday and Friday, the coffee tasted like battery acid was mixed in and this morning is is weak as fuck.

Why do people need to keep fucking with my coffee? If I had any confidence that it wouldn’t get stolen, I’d just buy a Tassimo to keep at my desk.

And, to that older lady? If you want your food or drink to me more flavorful… how about you quit fucking smoking, ok?

You might actually be able to taste things if you didn’t dump ashes into your mouth all day long. Think about that.

Camp

It’s early Friday morning at the Prince of Stanley’s year end school trip. Ok, it isn’t that early… it’s 7:49 and on a normal working Friday, I’d already have my nose hard to the grindstone.

Yesterday was filled with horseback riding, lean-to building and ziplining out in the woods. Today, it’s canoeing and archery before I let the Prince hit the souvenir shop and we jump on the bus back to civilization.

(It just hit me now but how cool would it have been to combine the horseback riding with the archery? There’s probably a policy somewhere about letting anyone shoot potentially lethal projectiles from the back of a large animal in mid-run. Pity.)

I’ve really had no connection out here, save for the times that I’ve been in the open field nearby. In fact, I’m writing this post in Evernote so that I can put it up later when we get back to E-ville. So, I’ve been in withdrawal a bit… I guess I can blame Rogers for that.

Right now, I’m going to go and wake up a half-full bunk of sleeping boys and get them up-and-at-’em before they ring the breakfast bell. I’m just praying for coffee at this point. Mmm… coffee.

RUTR 2010

It’s R-r-roll Up The Rim (or RUTR for the Canadian Internet folk) season again at Tim Hortons and nothing gets our hearts afluttter like combining coffee and the potential for winning prizes.

RUTR 2010 (pronounced ‘twenty ten’ like the cool kids say it) has over 31 million great prizes this year, including:

  • 40 Toyota Rav 4’s
  • 100 $10,000 cash prizes
  • 1,000 Toshiba netbooks
  • 25,000 $100 prepaid TimCards
  • 31,000,000+ donuts and coffees

I decided to take a year off from my RUTR off-season training since it didn’t do me much good last year; ending the 2009 campaign with a dismal 0.176 ERA (earned rims average). And, so far, it’s paying off! Two days into the season and my (Rimming? That really doesn’t sound good.) average is 0.500!!
